On Tuesday 9th January Men Get Eating Disorders Too’s petition to improve service provision for males closed on the Direct Gov website. The total number of signatures came to 533.
The petition was created by Sam Thomas, MGEDT Founder and Director, following the difficulties male sufferers face seeking support due to the stereotypical assumptions that still exist as well as the stigma associated. He hopes the petition and campaign will encourage the government to take the issue of male eating disorders seriously and make changes on policy and delivery levels so male sufferers are able to seek the help they need.
Sam said: “We are extremely pleased at the the total number of signatures and the support throughout the campaign. Thanks to everyone who has signed and helped promoted the petition – your support is greatly appreciated.
“The barriers males are faced accessing help and in treatment services is a big concern for us. Over the coming months we intend to build on the campaign with an aim to create change in the way services are delivered so that the specific needs of males sufferers are met. Ultimately, we want services to be inclusive to the needs of all.”
In the next few weeks MGEDT will be announcing plans on their campaign. Keep
